Mi chiamo Asia Rota e sono figlia di un postino e di una pittrice.

I mondi che i miei genitori mi hanno lasciato in eredità mi hanno permesso di incontrare lungo la mia strada la Mail Art e di decidere, con il passare del tempo, prima all'università, poi con incontri, interviste, ricerche da autodidatta, di studiare in maniera più approfondita questo fenomeno artistico così poco conosciuto in Italia. 

Sono nata sotto il segno della bilancia nell'anno 1994 (nello stesso anno in cui è anche uscito il film Il postino di Massimo Troisi e Michael Redford) a Bergamo (la città nella cui provincia si trova Cornello dei Tasso, il paese che ha dato i natali alla famiglia che ha fondato il sistema postale moderno europeo). 

Il mio nome deriva da una grande passione che avevano i miei genitori, ed in particolare mio padre, per i viaggi, infatti, questo vi dice qualcosa in più sulla mia famiglia: ho due fratelli, di cui il più giovane è indiano (è stato adottato). Sono cresciuta in un ambiente fortemente multiculturale, non solo dal punto di vista della provenienza, ma anche delle affinità, degli interessi, delle passioni.

Nel 2012, quando avevo 18 anni, ho partecipato al mio primo progetto di Mail Art. 

Alla fine del 2016 mi sono laureata in Beni Culturali alla Statale di Milano con una tesi su Shozo Shimamoto, un artista giapponese anche legato alla Mail Art, successivamente mi sono trasferita a Venezia dove ho vissuto e lavorato durante gli anni della magistrale in storia delle arti e conservazione dei beni artistici con indirizzo contemporaneo. 

Nel 2019 mi sono laureata a Ca' Foscari con una tesi sulla Mail Art, in cui analizzavo le sue origini, il suo percorso, il suo funzionamento, ed alcuni degli artisti più rappresentativi per capire la portata di questo mondo artistico.

Nel 2020 durante il periodo di lockdown dovuto alla pandemia da Covid, ho avviato un progetto d'arte postale per raccogliere le testimonianze dei mailartisti di tutto il mondo, i lavori ricevuti (quasi un centinaio, provenienti dai diversi angoli della terra) fanno parte di un piccolo archivio che andrà ad illustrare un libro dedicato alla Mail Art. 

Nel 2021 mi sono trasferita in Germania per un progetto lavorativo, ma il mio cuore e la mia mente artistiche sono rimaste segnate dall'Italia, e forse un po' soffocate dal modo di studiare e "tramandare" la storia dell'arte, oltre che dalla poca apertura mentale della ricerca. 

All'inizio del 2022 ho aperto quindi il profilo instagram @lafigliadelpostino per unirmi alla grande squadra di art sharer online, portando nel mondo dei social network la divulgazione di Mail Art, cercando in qualche modo di ampliare l'accessibilità a questa arte nascosta sotto lo strato più superficiale del sistema e della società artistica. 

@lafigliadelpostino è l'unico profilo di divulgazione con focus sull'arte postale, in Italia e nel mondo. 

Nel 2023 ho vinto il premio Cornello Dei Tasso istituito dal Museo dei Tasso e della Storia Postale di Camerata Cornello, in provincia di Bergamo. 

Alla fine del 2023 ho pubblicato il mio primo libro, un piccolo "manuale" per conoscere la Mail Art, un testo che ti aiuterà a capire le origini ed il funzionamento del fenomeno; il mio scritto è già preceduto dalle pubblicazioni di artisti italiani come ad esempio Vittore Baroni e Anna Boschi. 

Attualmente lavoro per una galleria d'arte contemporanea a Göttingen, in Bassa Sassonia, e curo progetti artistici legati alla quotidianità con altri professionisti del settore.

My name is Asia Rota, and I am the daughter of a postman ( = la figlia di un postino, hence @lafigliadelpostino) and a painter. The worlds my parents left me as an inheritance have allowed me to discover Mail Art along my journey and decide, over time, first at university, then through encounters, interviews, and self-taught research, to study this artistic phenomenon in greater depth, which is so little known in Italy.

I was born under the sign of Libra in 1994 (the same year the film Il Postino by Massimo Troisi and Michael Redford was released) in Bergamo (the city in whose province Cornello dei Tasso is located, the village that gave birth to the family that founded the modern European postal system).

My name originates from a great passion my parents, particularly my father, had for traveling. This reveals more about my family: I have two brothers, the youngest of whom is Indian (adopted). I grew up in a strongly multicultural environment, not only in terms of origins but also affinities, interests, and passions.

In 2012, when I was 18 years old, I participated in my first Mail Art project. At the end of 2016, I graduated in Cultural Heritage at the University of Milan with a thesis about Shozo Shimamoto, a Japanese artist also associated with Mail Art. Subsequently, I moved to Venice, where I lived and worked during my master's degree years in the history of arts and conservation of artistic heritage with a contemporary focus. In 2019, I graduated at Ca' Foscari University with a thesis about Mail Art, analyzing its origins, its journey, how it works, and some of its most representative artists to understand the scope of this artistic world.

In 2020, during the lockdown period due to the Covid pandemic, I initiated a postal art project to collect testimonies from mail artists around the world. The works received (almost a hundred, from various corners of the earth) are part of a small archive that will illustrate a book dedicated to Mail Art. In 2021, I moved to Germany for a work project, but my artistic heart and mind remained deeply connected to Italy, perhaps somewhat stifled by the way the history of art is studied and "passed on," as well as by the limited open-mindedness of research.

At the beginning of 2022, I therefore launched the Instagram profile @lafigliadelpostino to join the great team of online art sharers, bringing Mail Art dissemination to social media and trying, in some way, to broaden accessibility to this art hidden under the surface layer of the system and the art society.

@lafigliadelpostino is the only educational profile with a focus on postal art, in Italy and worldwide. In 2023, I won the Cornello Dei Tasso Award established by the Tasso Museum and Postal History Museum in Camerata Cornello, in the province of Bergamo. At the end of 2023, I published my first book, a small "manual" to get to know Mail Art; a text that will help you understand the origins and functioning of the phenomenon. My writing is already preceded by publications by Italian artists such as Vittore Baroni and Anna Boschi.

Currently, I work for a contemporary art gallery in Göttingen, Lower Saxony, and curate artistic projects linked to everyday life together with other professionists.

Mein Name ist Asia Rota, und ich bin die Tochter eines Postboten ( = la figlia di un postino, daher @lafigliadelpostino) und einer Malerin. Die Welten, die mir meine Eltern hinterlassen haben, haben es mir ermöglicht, auf meinem Weg Mail Art zu entdecken und im Laufe der Zeit zu entscheiden, zuerst an der Universität, dann durch Begegnungen, Interviews und autodidaktische Forschung, dieses künstlerische Phänomen genauer zu studieren, das in Italien so wenig bekannt ist.

Ich wurde im Zeichen der Waage im Jahr 1994 geboren (im selben Jahr, in dem der Film Il Postino von Massimo Troisi und Michael Redford herauskam) in Bergamo (der Stadt, in deren Provinz sich Cornello dei Tasso befindet, das Dorf, das der Familie den Ursprung gab, die das moderne europäische Postsystem gegründet hat).

Mein Name stammt aus einer großen Leidenschaft meiner Eltern, besonders meines Vaters, für das Reisen. Dies erzählt euch mehr über meine Familie: Ich habe zwei Geschwister, von denen der jüngste indisch ist (adoptiert). Ich bin in einer stark multikulturellen Umgebung aufgewachsen, nicht nur hinsichtlich der Herkunft, sondern auch der Affinitäten, Interessen und Leidenschaften.

Im Jahr 2012, als ich 18 Jahre alt war, nahm ich an meinem ersten Mail-Art-Projekt teil. Ende 2016 schloss ich mein Studium der Kulturwissenschaften an der Universität Mailand mit einer Abschlussarbeit über Shozo Shimamoto ab, einen japanischen Künstler, der ebenfalls mit der Mail Art verbunden ist. Anschließend zog ich nach Venedig, wo ich während meiner Masterjahre in der Geschichte der Künste und der Konservierung des künstlerischen Erbes mit zeitgenössischem Schwerpunkt lebte und arbeitete. Im Jahr 2019 schloss ich mein Studium an der Universität Ca' Foscari mit einer Abschlussarbeit über Mail Art ab, in der ich ihre Ursprünge, ihre Entwicklung, ihre Funktionsweise und einige ihrer repräsentativsten Künstler analysierte, um das Ausmaß dieser künstlerischen Welt zu verstehen.

Im Jahr 2020, während der Lockdown-Zeit aufgrund der Covid-Pandemie, startete ich ein Kunstprojekt per Post, um Zeugnisse von Mail-Künstlern aus aller Welt zu sammeln. Die erhaltenen Werke (fast hundert, aus verschiedenen Ecken der Erde) sind Teil eines kleinen Archivs, das ein Buch über Mail Art illustrieren wird. 

Im Jahr 2021 zog ich nach Deutschland für ein Arbeitsprojekt, aber mein künstlerisches Herz und mein künstlerischer Geist blieben stark mit Italien verbunden – vielleicht etwas erstickt durch die Art und Weise, wie die Kunstgeschichte studiert und „weitergegeben“ wird, sowie durch die begrenzte Offenheit der Forschung.

Anfang 2022 eröffnete ich daher das Instagram-Profil @lafigliadelpostino, um der großen Mannschaft von Online-Kunstvermittlern beizutreten und die Verbreitung von Mail Art in die sozialen Netzwerke zu bringen, wobei ich versuchte, die Zugänglichkeit zu dieser unter der Oberfläche des Systems und der Kunstgesellschaft verborgenen Kunst irgendwie zu erweitern.

@lafigliadelpostino ist das einzige Instagram-Profil mit Fokus auf Postkunst, in Italien und weltweit. Im Jahr 2023 gewann ich den Cornello Dei Tasso Preis, der vom Tasso Museum und dem Museum für Postgeschichte in Camerata Cornello in der Provinz Bergamo ins Leben gerufen wurde. Ende 2023 veröffentlichte ich mein erstes Buch, ein kleines „Handbuch“, um Mail Art kennenzulernen – ein Text, der dir hilft, die Ursprünge und die Funktionsweise des Phänomens zu verstehen. Meine Schrift wird bereits durch Veröffentlichungen italienischer Künstler wie Vittore Baroni und Anna Boschi ergänzt.

Derzeit arbeite ich für eine Galerie für zeitgenössische Kunst in Göttingen, Niedersachsen, und kuratiere künstlerische Projekte des Alltags mit anderen Fachleuten aus der Branche.
